Press Release

Bums on Seats

In response to the Roy Whalley’s statements at the AGM of Walsall FC, the Walsall Supporters’ Trust will be raising several issues with the club.

  1. Should we be concerned that the Directors have made no risk assessment of the impact of split ownership of the club and its ground lease? Is this best business practice? What guarantees does the club have over its future?

  1. Jeff Bonser mentioned in a recent article that he had provided a £1m loan investment to build the new stand. Is this what is meant by the Directors being in a unique position to ensure that Walsall FC’s cash flow is managed appropriately? What does this loan imply for the football club’s cash flow?

  1. If we are to move forward as a club, then we need to do more than simply offer cheap seats at a few games to get bums on seats. Does the club need a strategy for working with the town? How should it communicate what it does to existing supporters like season-ticket holders who do not get the full benefit of offers?

  1. How can the club find out why there were only 4,800 home fans attending the game against Stoke City? Is a questionnaire to fans, or people who are in the town at 3pm on a Saturday, a good way to start a meaningful marketing campaign?

Raising these issues is intended to generate information that will help supporters better understand the actions of the Directors. In turn it is hoped that supporters will feel able to work as partners with the Board in securing the club’s long-term future.
