Trust Raffle Supports Hospice
The Walsall Supporters'
Trust Summer Raffle has raised £300 for the Acorns Children’s Hospice. The
Hospice is a favourite charity of last year’s player-of-the-season, Ian Roper, whose
signed shirt was the central prize in the raffle.
Supporters’ Trust Treasurer
David Roe noted that “our fundraising for both the Supporters’ Trust and local
groups like Acorns is a major way in which we can connect with the community.
We are particularly please with the success of the raffle because it means that
we have donated over £500 to charity since we were formed.”
The proceeds from the sale have
been split between the Hospice and the Trust, in order to further the
community-work of both organisations. Acorns has a children’s hospice in
Walsall, very close to Bescot Stadium. Acorns Walsall is the first hospice in
the world to have a specialist unit for teenagers who can enjoy time with young
people of their own age, away from Barney videos and teddy bears.
All the children at the
11-bedded hospice can enjoy the multi-sensory room, activities, and visits and
there are also facilities for families to stay with their children. Acorns
spokeswoman Jessica Foster said: “We are really grateful for this very generous
donation. On average, caring for a child costs £30 a day so this raffle has
paid for 10 days of care.
“As well as the hospices we
have a community team providing support to families at home including
bereavement support. We currently care for around 400 families from across the
West Midlands.”
The Trust uses all of its
proceeds to encourage Walsall FC and the local community to work in
partnership. Trust Chair, Richard Hall argued that “the Trust needs to focus on
how it can sustain itself and making local connections is central to that aim.
This raffle will help us to develop and to work to gain more shares in the
football club.”
