Council backs Supporters' Trust
Walsall Borough Council has given its endorsement of the democratic aims and objectives of the Walsall Supporters' Trust. In separate letters to the Trust, Council Leader Mike Bird and Chief Executive Hardial Bhogal wished the Trust every success in its attempts to involve the fans in the running of Walsall FC. Mr Bhogal stated that the Trust was "a really exciting initiative". He added "the Council would wish to see the Trust succeed just as it would like to see the football club itself do well."
This level of widespread support is crucial to the success of the Trust initiative which already has the backing of local MPs Bruce George and David Winnick. Trust member and town councillor Garry Perry believes that "the involvement of terrace supporters and those with a genuine interest in the game can only assist the club in its endeavours to gain promotion and further the bonds that should exist between the club and its fans."
Bob Bates of the Trust working party was delighted with the news of the Council's support. "This represents a great step forward for the Trust. If it is to succeed, and be seen to be credible, the Trust must appeal to a broad range of opinion." The Council's endorsement of the Trust's democratic agenda shows the value of the link between the club, the borough and the fans. Members of the working party will be meeting with the Council to explore ways in which the Council can help the Trust.
Note to Editors
The Trust is attempting to forge a community of fans of all ages, which can work to promote an inclusive approach at Walsall FC. The Trust is linked to the Government's Supporter's Direct initiative but is a local, community initiative. The working party are looking to double the membership by the time that democratically-elected officers are voted in at the AGM. This will be held in late September. The Trust will then be working to gain shares in Walsall FC for its members.
